BONDING (DIASTEMA)

BONDING (DIASTEMA)

Diastema refers to a gap or space between the teeth.  Diastemas affect smile aesthetics quite negatively. The most important reason for this is the dark image created by the gap between the two teeth during the smile. These gaps are eliminated with an aesthetic appearance through bonding.

Diastemas generally occur for genetic reasons. They can spread all over the teeth in people with wide jawbone and narrow teeth. If there is a missing tooth, the teeth will move to that area, but Diastemas will remain as the gap cannot be closed completely. In individuals with compatible jaw and teeth, long muscle, called the frenulum, located in the middle of the lip, especially in the upper jaw may cause an opening to occur between the two front teeth.

Treating Diastema: Bonding

Misaligned teeth are straightened by applying certain amounts of force to the teeth with orthodontic treatment. If there is an inappropriate lower and upper jaw relationship, it is corrected with this treatment. Thus, healthy chewing is achieved. However, this is a time-consuming process.

In Composite Laminated Technical system, the gaps are closed with restorative materials and strong adhesives called bonding, without any changes in the location of teeth. The system is quite simple but requires a lot of precision. Tooth surfaces are cleaned from any residue before moving to etching phase. Adhesive agents are then applied to the tooth surface and activated. This process is repeated until the desired shape is achieved by loading composite materials on the tooth in appropriate quantities. The process is finished following the polishing of this material with suitable instruments. The composite laminate technique is one of the most suitable methods used for closing up moderate gaps. Any damage that may occur in the filling in the long term can be corrected with minor interventions.

Porcelain Laminate Technique is used when larger gaps need to be closed, and when the goal is to achieve a better gingival fit. Before the restoration, the dental impression is taken by the use of necessary minimal arrangements. Then, special laminated porcelains are produced by the ceramist with the help of this dental impression. These very thin porcelains are applied on the teeth with a specific adhesive system. This technique is always more successful than the aesthetic composite method. However, sometimes it needs etching from dental tissue to increase the resistance of this fragile material, and if it is broken it cannot be repaired. These are the major disadvantages of this technique.
